Revised Portfolio

The above image shows my new opening spread for Mahlu. My stationary system as shown during the portfolio review is on the following page.

I placed a larger image of my Mahlu packaging within my portfolio and made the flat image of my design smaller. I also separated the different panels of my design so that it would be easier for the viewer to see what each panel looks like.

This is the full spread for my cookie website.

This is a close-up of my thumbnail shots of my cookie website. This way the viewer can see multiple shots from my website instead of just a single shot like before.

Since I decided to bring my Avenir Booklet along with me as part of my portfolio, I got rid of the close-up spread and instead placed the poster and images of the booklet pages on a single spread.

The above image is the new opening page for my cookbook display. Before, I had the cover for my cookbook. Now, I have a single spread so the viewer can more closely see my design.

Revised Design Statement

I am interested in design that makes data and information easier to comprehend, while intriguing the viewer. My goal is to simplify information so it is quickly accessible to the viewer while maintaining visual appeal. I strive to make my work engaging for audiences of varying abilities, ages and incomes.

I seek designs that are bold and playful yet simplistic. I stray from unnecessarily complex designs that add decoration to the design without increasing the understanding of the content. Design is meant to aid in the processing of information, not detract from it.

I take an optimistic approach in my designs by showcasing the positive attributes within the topic/category as opposed to the negative attributes. I feel in this way I am positively impacting the viewer and fulfilling my hope of improving their life.

Revised Project Reviews

Project Two Brief

My stationary system will include my resume, cover letter, thank you cards and design statement. These pieces will be used to promote my design abilities to potential employers. Each of these individual pieces will be developed simultaneously in order to maintain cohesiveness within my stationary system.

During development, special attention will be paid to the typography and the cohesiveness of the information within the design. I will also attempt to create a visual correlation between all the elements through the use of color and repetition of design elements. The location of these elements will change with each piece of the stationary system in order to create variety within my system. The graphic elements will be kept simple so as not to detract from the information within my resume and cover letter.

I plan to have my entire identity system completed by Spring Break. This will allow me sufficient time to seek input and advice from my classmates and professionals. I will then make changes accordingly.

Project One Brief

My portfolio will display examples of my work for future employers to browse during the hiring process. A print, emailable and online version of my portfolio will be available for employers. The online and emailable versions of my portfolio will contain fewer pieces than my print portfolio. This will allow me to bring new examples of my design work to the interview. When determining which pieces will be shown in which version of my portfolio, I will consider the appropriateness of each design for the medium in which it is presented. For example, designs with complex folds will be left out of my electronic portfolios.

I plan to focus on project one after returning from spring break. This way I can spend the weeks leading up to spring break designing my stationary system, and editing the pieces I want to place in my portfolio. After spring break I plan on printing out my designs and placing them in my portfolio.

During the process of assembling my portfolio, I am hoping to meet with three design professionals. I am hoping to take their input into consideration before finalizing my portfolio for the class portfolio review.

I've been working on developing a stationary system for myself. Here is one possible version for my resume and cover letter layout. I like having the freedom in this design to change the location of the squares.

Personal Logo

I've been working on developing a personal logo to put on my identity system. Of the logos I've developed, these three are my favorite. Does anyone have any comments, ideas, preferences or opinions about which they think is the strongest of the bunch?

Design Statement

Here is my current version of my design statement:

eHeiny Design Statement

As a designer I am interested in designing in a manner that makes information easier to comprehend, but does so in a way that catches the readers interest. I like my designs to be playful and have movement. I want the reader to become eagerly engaged in my designs. Often I attempt to achieve this through bright primary and secondary colors and geometric shapes.

I prefer to design projects that improve the lives of people individually as opposed to the world as a whole. This may mean a particular project attempts to simply entertain someone, or attempts to make someone’s life easier. Due to this preference, my designs tend to shy away from large-scale political messages.

Additionally, I prefer to take an optimistic approach in my designs. I want to showcase the positive attributes of a given product/statement/person, as opposed to the negative attributes of its competitor. I feel in this way I am positively impacting the viewer and fulfilling my hope of improving their life.
